May 8, 1986
Jay almost had his life taken away. He was trying to save his friend, Kim's, dog and he ended up getting swept out to sea by a huge wave. There was no way for him to get out. A man suddenly grabbed him out of the water and put him on his surfboard. This was the day Jay met his hero Frosy Hesson.
May 9, 1986
Today was the first day that he Jay surfed a wave. He went to find and old board to ride and went out to try it. Blonde was the one who first taught him how to get up on a wave.
7 years later
Jay snuck out and went with Frosty to watch him surf mavericks very early in the morning. When jay saw this, he knew that he was destined to surf the monster waves. After they arrived back at Jay's house, he had asked Frosty if he could teach him how to surf the mavericks. Frosty's response was,"No."
A week later
Frosty and his wife talked over the fact that Jay wanted train him for the mavericks. That was the day when Jay was working at Pleasure Pizza and Frosty pulled up in his van. Jay ran outside and met with Frosty. He told Jay that he will train him under some conditions and those conditions only.
The next day
The training began. Jay could not be too late nor too early, he had to right on time. He had to do several things along the way before he was able to surf the mavericks.
Weeks and Weeks
After weeks and weeks of training, Jay was out everyday learning new things from his trainer Frosty. Some days it was not just surfing, he had to paddle, wrote reports on observation, do exercise off land and things like that. An example of things that he had to do was to be able to hold his breath for 4 minutes straight under water because the mavericks could hold you down that long. Another example is Jay had to be able to paddle 36 miles across the bay with out stopping.
Frosty wife
After a hard day training, Frosty came back to his house to start to repair his one surfboard. His daughter came out screaming, "mommy is sick!" Frosty ran inside and saw her on the floor. They dialed 911 but it was to late. She suffered from a stroke and she had passed away. This was so hard for Frosty and his family to get over.
After the funeral
It was so hard for Fosty to get over the fact that his wife or also his bestfriend, has passed. Jay knew it was hard for him but there connection helped him get through it.
The Long Paddle
Shortly after the passing of Frosty's wife Brenda, Jay went to meet up with Frosty as usual at his house. He was not there and he noticed that a paddle-board was gone. Jay panicked because he knew he was probably trying to relieve stress from the passing of his wife. He quickly grabbed the other board and ran down to the bay where they practiced paddling. It was 36 miles across from one side of the bay to the other and Frosty was right in the middle. This one one of Jays goals to be able to paddle across the whole bay so he cheered up Frosty and pushed him along. They both made it the whole 36 miles across, so now Jay was just about ready for the mavericks.
Jays Birthday
On Jays 16 birthday, his mom got him a wave radio what would tell him how big the swells were and at what direction they were moving. Jay never told his mom what he was training for but she found out from Frosty. Jay also got a new surfboard from Frosty that was custom made just for him for the day the Mavericks came.
The Day of the "Mavericks"
It was early one morning when Jay got a call from Frosty telling him its go time. Jay was both physically and mentally prepared for this day. The whole thing that mavericks were a myth, wasn't so true anymore. This was the day it hit the news papers and the whole town of Santa Cruz, CA was there watching the talented surfers ready to go. Surfers were getting up on the waves but going right back down hard crashing in the water. It was easy for someone to easily die. When jay got up he did the same as all the other surfers. The second time, Jay got up on one of the biggest waves of the day and he did it. That was a special moment for not just him but everyone.
